Advantages of installing sod

With sod, the results are instant, and you will have a ready to use lawn in a matter of days once the turf settles in (usually 2 – 3 weeks). Sod can be installed anytime during the growing season (spring, summer or fall) and reduces the chances of weeds as opposed to seeding. We recommend installing sod during spring or fall when temperatures are cooler.

Disadvantages of sod installation

Sod installation is relatively more expensive than seeding because of the materials and labor involved. Sod limits you to grass species chosen by sod growers. Central Sod Farms in Plainfield, for example, uses mostly Kentucky Bluegrass.

Lawn seeding advantages

Seeding is the most cost-efficient when trying to grow turf. The cost of grass seed is way less compared to sod. The labor involved for seeding a property is minimum as the only thing to do is soil preparation. Another great advantage of seeding is the flexibility of using your grass seed mixture that better suits your property and local weather conditions.

Disadvantages of seeding

Timing is very important when performing seeding or overseeding, spring and fall are the best times of the growing season for seeding due to cooler temperatures. Temperatures between 55-70 degrees are known to provide the best germination rates. Improper timing leads to poor germination rates or weak turf which promotes disease and insects. Seeding may take up to 10 weeks to fully establish and foot traffic should be avoided along with proper maintenance. Weather conditions play an important role in the time it takes for the grass seed to fully establish. Seeding may lead to erosion and weed problems. Seeding, in general, will take a full growing season to fully establish to withstand heavy foot traffic.

Whether you chose to establish or repair your lawn from sod or seed, we will help you decide which option is better for your property based on soil and weather conditions. Proper care and maintenance will be discussed during our process to ensure you get the lawn you always wanted.
